This standard ensures child safety by imposing requirements that prevent hazards such as sharp edges, entrapment risks, and tipping incidents. It mandates the use of safe materials and protective design elements, such as stable construction, smooth surfaces, and appropriate spacing between bars, allowing for innovative designs without compromising on safety.

The standard specifies that all bars or slats must be oriented vertically, with vertical gaps between 75 mm and 100 mm. No horizontal bars should be present between the top and bottom rails. The minimum height from the floor to the top rail must be at least 60 mm. Additionally, the bars must be sufficiently strong and rigid to prevent detachment or distortion by children.

Metal components must undergo surface treatment including pickling and phosphating as specified by relevant codes. The finish should be smooth, uniform, and free from defects, with a minimum dry film thickness of 0.10 mm. Paints used should be durable and resistant to chipping or flaking, with flexibility and adhesion verified through tests on sample panels in accordance with the applicable standards.

While the standard does not prescribe specific test methods, stability is generally evaluated by applying horizontal forces to simulate child interaction to ensure the playpen does not tip or slide. Rigidity tests involve applying vertical and lateral loads to measure deflection, ensuring it remains minimal and no permanent deformation occurs.
